FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions
Why would I want to be part of the FCE when I’m already associated with the IBM (International Brotherhood of Magicians), SAM (Society of American Magicians), or other organizations?
Those are good groups and we cooperate with them when possible. Several of our members are also active in those clubs. The FCE differs in two major ways:
(1) The FCE has a wider association. It is not just magicians or illusionists. There is a lot to learn from many of the performing arts that can make your programs more effective…and it’s not just new magic tricks. Since many of our members are magicians there is plenty of opportunity to develop those skills, too.
(2) There is one more important bond in addition to a common interest in performing…CHRIST. Members of the FCE have a higher purpose for entertainment. It is to give honor and glory to God (not ourselves) through the use of the talents He has given to us. Along with that goal comes a greater responsibility. We are representing Christ to the world. For this reason, you might find that FCE members are more willing to share performance secrets (within appropriate ethical guidelines) than at secular groups due to this desire to build effective presenters of God’s Word.
What is the FCE or Fellowship of Christian Entertainers?
We’re an association of entertainers of all kinds (magicians, jugglers, comedians, unicyclists, etc.) that happen to follow Jesus as leader in their lives. We get together a few times a year to encourage each other and become more skilled in presentation through lectures, etc.
How many members are there?
We have about 100 people on our active newsletter list. At meetings we have anywhere from 15 to 40 people.
How can we contact you?
How long have you been around?
Our national organization has existed for at least 50 years in some form or another. We changed our name in 2000 shortly after I became president.
How do you incorporate Christian teachings into your act?
How do you use magic?
Just like any other form of entertainment, we can capture someone’s attention through solid skills and then with more or less credibility share our personal experiences with God and the truth of the Bible. Different performers use their talents in different ways. Some may use them as illustrations, some may not even share their faith outright but lead by example.
What else do you do?
A couple of years ago we held a big variety program and donated all the money to charity. Our members have also participated in the Katrina relief effort. We keep track of great FAMILY entertainment options in the Twin Cities and publish that to members via e-mails.
